About
I have spent around thirty five years in Art and Design education, teaching in schools and privately. I have always made time for painting and have exhibited and sold work in galleries and exhibitions.
I am drawn to the effects of light and use photographic references as well as sketches andstudies as starting points. My studio process involves making drawings and studies to refine and develop images before tackling more focused work . This planning still allows for necessary surprises, changes and further aesthetic decisions as work progresses.
I have painted‘ en plein air ’ and enjoy the immediacy and speedy execution required. These energetic studies can be complete in themselves or developed further in the warmer studio environment.
I enjoy the act of painting and the personal decision making process involved in making art. The use of subjects from the environments I experience, grounds each work and gives a focus and structure for the expressive use of materials. Whether it’s a landscape, seascape or built environment there is a process of translation into the language of Art.
ABOUT
Growing up in the city of Aberdeen and visiting the rugged Banff coastline with end on buildings, steep descents and weathered surfaces provided a new and very different environment for me to explore. My interest in harbours, boats and industrial backdrops developed from working as a teacher at Peterhead Academy.
Bennachie and the surrounding landscape as well as Deeside are the main sources for my landscape paintings. More recently, images of Aberdeen have interested me as well as sunlit Spanish cities and towns.
The act of drawing and painting connects all chosen subjects as part of an ongoing creative process.
